I think the mailing lists, usenet, web forums and social networking sites are doing great work helping newbies get their problems solved. But there’s one thing that might be good for certain types of programmers - a mentoring program where you can get a mentor provided you contribute serious code and effort to an open source project of your mentor’s choice. The agreement is formal, openly discussed and transparently implemented - giving code to the community and a professional friendship to the newcomer, with contacts. What this should NOT degenerate into, is a social networking community for other things - including a geek dating service, in the worst case.
Something like Google Summer Of Code, initially without the money, but with all the meticulous organization and seriousness of code and software development.

We need the “faithful sheep” programmers to get a reliable, open, professional mentor to train them, so to speak, but with no drawbacks associated with office mentors - like personal favors (this is global, for many countries, and personal favors can deteriorate into other things) and with the all-important open source code to show at the end of the “OpenMentor Open Internship”.
If anyone has discussed and/or implemented this thing in other forms, I’d be glad if links are provided, TIA.
